So it's high noon in the middle of the desert.
Ok let's not be as extreme
Let's
say late afternoon on the subway back from work, where you notice that you forgot to charge your cell phone. You're expecting that all important call, when just as the phone rings, it goes the familiar dead-looking screen of the depleted battery.
Ok first some perspective:
One of the first and most challenging problems for mobile device makers (cell phones, I-Pods, Game Boys, or mobile computers)
is the energy issue. Over my career I've seen dozens of companies who have tried to tackle this problem from many different perspectives. Ultimately, -let's face it for better (if you are a battery maker) or for worse (if you own anything mobile)
until we get the atomic battery going, most of the solutions that I will describe below are less than perfect.
Now to what's out there:
1. the standard wall socket charger: a great device, if you remember to charge your cell phone at the right time.
Another drawback, is that you will usually charge your cell phone when you can, and this means that you will be slowly killing your current battery's capacity for re-charging (remember that your cell phone battery likes to be fully depleted when it's time to charge)
2. Wind-up chargers. Now as far as "being on a lost island" goes. These kinds of chargers take the cake. One of the only drawbacks to these things, is that you have to keep winding or no energy will come out ?now even for a 5 minute call, this is not a trivial piece of exercise.
What's nice about this kind of technology though, is that it involves what we call piezo-electric conversion.
In the not-too far future, we will see networked devices on the BAN (Body Area Network) which will be operated by activities such as walking, or the difference in body temperature. Wind-up is the beginning of this technology.
3. The last one, I will have to say, is my personal favorite. It is such a simple idea, and so convenient, that I cannot for the life of me think of why I didn't invent this sucker. We are talking about chargers such as the charge-n-go device (available on www.chargemobilephone.com ) which takes a regular AA battery, in a lipstick-size
tube, which has interchangeable power plugs for most cell phones, and allows you to use your cell phone immediately on a AA battery. My little two cents: use rechargeable batteries, this will save both bucks and the planet, and in terms of convenience it's so small, it can fit in my socks as I'm jogging.
I also heard on the rumor mill that the company making the charge-n-go emergency cell phone charger will also be making an adaptor to charge I-Pods (so I can upgrade, and buy only the connector, and save again!)

Choosing The Right Phone and Voice Mail System
Phone and voice mail systems can be pretty costly, even for companies with a low number phones.
Before investing in any type of phone system or voice mail system, you need to estimate how much your company is likely to expand over the next few years and if possible how many phones you may require.
Failure to do this could cost you or your company a lot of money in upgrade and restructuring costs further down the road.
It is better and cheaper to plan and allow for expansion at an early stage, than wait until it is too late. If you plan to remain under ten phones then I would recommend you invest in a KSU-less phone system.
Basically these look like normal phones that carry all the technology and software needed to run a small phone system of up to four lines and eight to twelve extensions.
These systems incorporate many of the features that full PBX phone systems offer (though not voice mail).
